Describe how the girl with a basket impress the writer William C. Douglas.


Ans:          The writer William C Douglas visited India in 1950. He travelled
                           from  Delhi to Ranikhet. He was going from Delhi to Bareilly by
                           train. It was a slow train a stopped at every station. He got
                           down at every station and talked to the people.
Refugee Children: At one station as he got down from the train, some refugee children surrounded him. They were selling baskets and fans. The writer bought some baskets and fans. His arms were full.
Girl’s Picture: Among those children, there was a beautiful girl of nine years. Her condition was very pitiable. She was in rages. She begged the writer to buy her basket. There were tears in her eyes. Her voice was very heart-touching.
Girl’s Behaviour: The writer did not want to buy any more things but seeing her poor condition, he put some money into her basket as charity. But the little girl did not like it. This hurt herself respect. Tears came into her eyes. She did not want the money as alms.  She returned the money to the writer with all pride and self respect. Then the writer was forced to buy her basket and he bought it. The girl wiped her tears. She smiled and ran away towards her hut. Thus the writer was much impressed by her behaviour.
Love with India:  Thayer writer says that this girl was really a true symbol of Indian soul and culture. He thinks that Indian are very gentle. Hardworking and full of good virtues. They love freedom. He says that it is one reason that he has fallen love with India.
